Teppanyaki Chinatown
Teppanyaki in Manchester’s Chinatown was first brought teppanyaki to the northwest in 1987. Literally ‘grilling on an iron plate’, diners sit at a large table surrounding the cooking surface where the chef prepares fresh meat, seafood, and vegetables before your eyes, bringing a real sense of theatre to the dining experience. Only top-quality produce is used with salmon from Loch Duart, beef from The Borders hung for 28 days to impart maximum flavor, and chicken fresh from Cumbria. The menu also offers sushi and sashimi as well as tempura and yakitori along with a good selection of wines, beers, and sake to complement the food. Teppanyaki is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner and there are some great-value lunch and early evening offers available.
The Spärrows
The Sparrows is a modern, Central European restaurant offering a great variety of handmade dumplings & pasta of European origin. The specialty of the house is Spätzle [fresh egg pasta] representing a vast geographical region of South Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Alsace & Sud Tyrol, including Trentino & Alto Adige of Northern Italy. The Dumplings menu expands further to European classics, such as delicious Russian-style Pelimeni, Polish Pierogi, Italian ravioli, and freshly rolled pasta. All are complimented by a choice of traditional/regional sauces & daily baked bread. A cup of Italian coffee or Japanese green tea should not be a miss with Daz’s wife’s brownie, while Swiss craft beer, a glass of organic Austrian wine, or fine Japanese Sake will make a perfect pairing with Goulash Tyrolese.

Street Urchin
The specials board advertises the fishes and dishes of the day, and the main menu – and also the wine list – changes regularly to reflect the best produce that husband-and-wife team Kevin and Rachel Choudhary can get hold of; they recommend checking the restaurant’s social media pages for further information about the dishes currently on, or just drop in and enjoy the surprise. It’s all about market-led local produce, cooked and presented simply. Super-fresh fish and shellfish is backed up by seasonal meats, including game when available. Past specials have ranged from whole grilled seabass with lashings of parsley butter and piled high with peppery watercress to creamy cider mussels and a hunk of bread made on the premises, plus on trend ox cheek poutine and hanger steak with cherry tomatoes.
Everything is sourced locally and ethically, from the veg to the cordials, and the contemporary kitchen and bar serves beer from nearby independent breweries as well as a well-curated wine list.

The Little Yeti
The Little Yeti is one of the newest dining spots on Barlow Moor Rd, but from the well-oiled team behind Didsbury veterans Gurkha Grill. It’s an establishment of the ‘limited menu but executed very well’ variety, which is more common in Asia than over here, where ‘all things to all people’ is perhaps too often attempted.
The specialty you visit The Little Yeti for is momos, which for the uninitiated are not just a terrifying internet meme but also round dumplings not dissimilar to Japanese gyoza or Polish pierogi.
